Travel Activities

Make the trip go by faster by having fun along the way! Here are a few ideas of games and activities to share with your kids to enjoy the journey to the beaches of South Carolina.

Make a Trip-Log or Scrapbook

Give out a big spiral bound sketchpad or legal pad with a box of crayons or washable markers. Each person can draw a map of the trip, what they did each day, or paste in souvenirs collected along the way.

Share Songs from a Songbook

If your group is musically inclined, you can have sing-a-longs while traveling. Make sure to have a songbook with the words printed in it. It's fun to remember the old classics and learn new jingles that may become family faves for the future!

The License Plate Game

Print a United States map or a list of the states from the computer before your trip and color in the states as you see a plate from each one. It may take several trips to fill in the entire map, but it can be your family project or else work on a time line to see how many each can get on the way. Take small prizes to award each participant.

Counting Cows

If you are going on the rural "scenic" route, each kid can count cows on his or her side of the car. If you pass a cemetery, you lose all the cows on that side of the car. The one with the most cows wins. Have some snack or small prize for the winner or award all when finished.

Magnetic Board Games

There are many small, magnetic board games available at any discount store or toy store. The classics of Chess, Checkers, Backgammon, and Chinese Checkers usually come in one package with different pieces in ziplock bags or handy storage compartments within the game's board. Your children will enjoy learning these games they'll play the rest of their lives!

Reading Aloud

Encourage family members to take turns reading a story each or choose a book ahead of time with stories you can read to your children. Time will pass quickly!

Money Lessons-Trip Allowance

Give your kids money for the day that is for their use to spend on snacks, souvenirs, treats, games, or towards a larger token to take home or use at the beach. Help them make good choices and keep track of what they spend.

Printable Car Games

Ahead of leaving on your trip, print out some games to take along: tic-tac-toe, lines and dots, scavenger hunt, car Bingo, and more. You can find lots of free games here.
