The historic and contemporary styles of Pawley Island homes are unique on this island that has served as a retreat for centuries. Some of the homes date back to the mid 1800'sas summer residences for plantation owners and their families.Pawleys Island is touted as "the oldest seaside resort in America."

There is a historic section of homes on the island which is marked for visitors. One such home is the R. F. W. Allston House. This summer residence owned by Robert F. W. Allston (1801-1864) who built it on the site after the state of South Carolina granted the marsh behind it to him in 1846. Allston had large property holdings in the area and was a successful rice planter. He served as the governor of South Carolina between 1856 and 1858. The house on the current site was struck by Hurricane Hugo in 1989 but survived the storm and was placed on higher wooden posts.

One of the historic homes in our vacation rental program is known as the Caledonia House. It got its name from being the summer residence of rice planter Robert Nesbit who owned the nearby Caledonia plantation (1799-1848). This home was in the Nesbit family until the death of Ralph Nesbit in 1938. This home boasts ocean facing hammocks and rocking chairs on its wraparound porches with direct ocean access.
